Use a Code Phrase with Teens to Save Embarrassment

Rather than embarrass my son with the usual parent directives, I give the whole parent lecture a code phrase. When we part, knowing he is trying his freedom and testing his wings, I tell him to "dress warm." It’s my phrase that means, act responsibly with your friends and use your head when making choices. It has saved me from feeling like a nag and he knows exactly what it means, all of the time. I can say it in front of his friends, email it, post it, text it or send it in voice mail, and it always means the same thing. It’s a verbal hug that has huge meaning for both of us!
