How to Make a Bakery-Worthy, Flat-Top Cake

Home baking can be frustrating when you have a picture of the perfect cake in your mind, but when you bake it and ice it, it looks like a domed hamburger bun. To remove the "dome" effect on your cake, let the cake cool in the baking pan. When it is cool, use a long, serrated kitchen knife that is longer than the cake pan is wide, cut across the top of the cake following the line of the pan, and remove the top. Flip the cake onto a plate, cut site down. Voila! You have a flat and stable cake to decorate!
