Sick Kids Treat: Make Ice Pops to Combat Dehydration

It's never easy when kids get sick, especially when they're having a tough time eating or drinking enough fluids. The risk there, of course, is dehydration, and you should always consult your pediatrician. When kids aren't taking in enough liquids, they can become lethargic and even dehydrated. One thing I've found that appeals to sick kids is an ice pop. There's something about that cool, tasty treat that makes it a bit easier to ingest, especially for kids. You can buy them in different flavors or make some yourself, using water, juice or electrolyte-enriched drinks. Hope it helps you, too!

How to Join the Friends of Ricki Community

Just got back from a great trip to L.A., where I met up with Friends of Ricki, the groundbreaking social/TV community for Ricki Lake's new TV show, launching in September. I'm so proud and excited to be a founding member! I got to meet so many wonderful social media friends, and even Ricki herself (she's amazing)! Kids Won't Eat Their Veggies? Make Your Own Salad Bar!

Kids won't eat their veggies? See what happens when you make your own salad bar! It's a great way to get kids to eat more salad. Call it their Make Your Own Salad Bar night! Set out various ingredients - lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, cheeses, nuts, fruits, etc. Also, set out various dressings, from ranch to balsamic and bleu cheese to French. Then let kids arrange their choices on their plates and choose the dressing they want to try - mixing it up keeps things interesting. One thing I’ve learned is that if you keep it fun, kids may surprise you with their choices!

Easing Separation Anxiety with a "Kissing Hand" from Mom

My twins reminded me of something that helped them get through separation anxiety. When they went to preschool, it was tough for all of us. They'd cry and hold on so I wouldn't leave. A friend gave me a wonderful book: The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. Chester Raccoon is anxious about going to kindergarten, so his mother kisses his hand as a way for him to carry her love all day. I took this idea a step further by putting on red lipstick before kissing my daughters' hands. With a bright red memento of Mom to hold, they were able to transition to school more easily. We still do this sometimes!

Create a Backyard Garden with Your Kids for Fun, Health

Gardening is fun and educational for kids, and it has a great end result - food they can eat! If you have some space in the yard, give them their own little plot of land to care for. Take them to a garden center and let them choose the fruits and vegetables they want to plant. Then, help them decide where the seeds or plants should go. Next, have them tend their little garden by watering their plants and checking progress. Then, they can harvest the fruits of their labor, and best of all, eat them!

SmartyPantsMama's Top Video Blogging (Vlogging) Tip

I recently met Caroline Murphy, a.k.a. @SmartyPantsMama, of www.smartypantsmama.com, at the SheStreams conference in Florida. What a treat! She certainly lived up to her brand, sharing great tips with us here at 30Second Mom. As a blogger, one of her top video blogging (vlogging) tips is to cover the screen when you're videotaping yourself so you don't get distracted and can focus on looking at the camera. This creates more eye contact with the viewer and better engagement. What a great idea! Watch her video for more detail. Thanks for sharing with us, Caroline!

Be Yourself - Online & Offline - and Show the Real You

This is a simple reminder to just be yourself. You're uniquely you, and that's very special. No one else can be! So don't waste your time trying to be someone else. People can sense that, even online, and it turns them off. There's a great quote by Bernard Baruch: "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." And it's so true. What it means is that the people who are important in your life will like you for you. And the ones who don't? It just doesn't matter. So go ahead and be yourself. You may be surprised by how many people like you, for you!

Mommy Niri: Tell Your Kids What's In the Foods They Eat

I recently met the fabulous Mommy Niri (www.mommyniri.com) at the SheStreams conference in Florida. She had a great tip to share about teaching kids to eat healthy. Sounds simple, but she says to communicate with kids about the health benefits of the foods they're eating. So if they're having milk or yogurt, talk about the calcium that's in there to build strong bones. If they're having orange juice or fruit, talk about the vitamin C that's in there to help their immune systems. I think this is a great idea (it worked for my kids, too)! Watch her video for more!

Yummy & Healthy Taco Night: Use Ground Turkey Instead!

We love tacos, but depending on the ingredients you use, they're not always healthy. Because it's a quick, easy and delicious dinner that everyone loves, I found a way to make taco night healthier. I swap out the ground beef for ground turkey instead, reducing fat and creating a leaner, less greasy meal. The flavor is still there, and once I add in fresh greens, tomatoes, cheese and salsa, with a side of black beans, it's a well balanced dinner that everyone agrees on. Hope you try it and plan your own fiesta!
